Five months after the incident, the prosecutor tasked with determining what, if any, charges will be brought against South Dakota’s Attorney General in relation to a September vehicle-pedestrian accident that killed a man near Highmore has scheduled a news conference this afternoon (Feb. 18, 2021) in Pierre.
Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg is accused of hitting Joseph Boever the night of Sept. 12, 2020, on Highway 14 west of Highmore. Ravnsborg found Boever’s body in the ditch the next morning.
Deputy Hyde County Deputy State’s Attorney Emily Sovell will make a brief statement on where she’s at in the case. Also participating will be Beadle County State’s Attorney Michael Moore, who is assisting Sovell.
Ravnsborg called 9-1-1 right after the collision and thought he’d hit a deer. He was driving back to Pierre from a republican event in Redfield and said he had not been drinking.
In November (Nov. 2, 2020), South Dakota Department of Public Safety Secretary Craig Price released information from their investigation which showed Ravnsborg was distracted at the time of the accident.
How Hyde County sheriff Mike Volek initially handled the accident has also been called into question, with some saying he treated Ravnsborg more favorably than he would an average citizen. Volek let Ravnsborg borrow one of his personal vehicles to drive back to Pierre.
