The annual South Dakota Law Enforcement Memorial Service will be held in Pierre tomorrow morning (May 12) in conjunction with National Law Enforcement Memorial Week.
A motorcade will depart the George S. Mickelson Criminal Justice Center at 8:45am and proceed to the Fallen Officer Memorial located at Capitol Lake. A wreath-laying ceremony will take place there at 9:30am. Lutheran Memorial Church will be hosting this year’s memorial service, which will begin at 10am at the church.
In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which the date falls as Police Week. In keeping with this tradition, the South Dakota Fraternal Order of Police, in conjunction with state, local, and federal law enforcement agencies, has held this annual memorial service to honor the 67 Law Enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty in South Dakota.
