Individuals who haven’t filed their 2020 federal income tax return or haven’t sent the IRS what they owe, need to get that done today (May 17).
IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig says penalties and interest will begin to accrue on any remaining unpaid balances after today. Individual taxpayers who need more time can request an extension until Oct. 15 by filing Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or by using the Free File link on IRS.gov. But, Rettig says, filing Form 4868 does not grant an extension of time to pay federal taxes due. Those payments are still due today.
In March (March 17, 2021), the United States Treasury Department and Internal Revenue Service said they’d automatically extended the federal income tax filing due date for individuals from April 15 to May 17, 2021.
