The Pierre City Commission has awarded a $2.1 million contract to Morris Inc. to upgrade Airport Road.
City engineer John Childs says from Lowell Avenue, east past the airport terminal, will be completely rebuilt this year.
Childs says the Airport Road project will begin as the B Street detour project wraps up, but exactly when that will be isn’t known just yet.
Childs says the Airport Road project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

The Pierre City Commission awarded a $2.1 million contract to Morris Inc. to upgrade Airport Road.
Airport Road from Lowell Avenue east past the airport terminal will be completely rebuilt this year. The project includes new storm water drainage, a new asphalt surface, and a sidewalk on the south side of the road.
The work is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
The project will start as the B Street detour project is wrapping up. Earlier this year, the City began building a new low maintenance road, B Street, to serve as a detour for both commercial and airport traffic during Airport Road construction. B Street connects South Airport Road and Piper Street.
“We expect to maintain access to the airport terminal throughout the majority of the Airport Road construction,” said John Childs City Engineer. “B Street will primarily provide rear access to the commercial buildings in the area. But it can also provide access to the airport complex as needed.”
The Airport Road and B Street projects are just a portion of the city’s street construction schedule. This construction season, the city is rebuilding a portion of Highland Avenue and making improvements to more than 50 blocks of city street. Some will be completely rebuilt, some will receive new underground utilities, some will get new curb and gutter, and others will get a new surface.
An increased appropriation from the commission combined with our State Transportation Improvement Plan allotment is allowing the city to tackle additional street projects this year.
The City maintains 80 miles of streets. Each year, City staff assess the streets, in addition to utilities, sidewalks and curbs to prioritize street maintenance and reconstruction projects.
