In the first game of a legion baseball double header yesterday (Thurs.) at Hyde Stadium, Pierre Post 8 took the lead late and defeated Mitchell Post 18 4-3.
The game was tied at three with Pierre batting in the bottom of the sixth when Cade Hinkle singled on a 3-2 count, scoring one run.
Mitchell got on the board in the first inning. Joe VanOverschelde drew a walk, scoring one run.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Pierre tied things up at three when Jake Helleloid induced Andy Gordon to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored. Post 8 put up three runs in the fourth inning. The rally was led by a single by Hinkle and a fielder’s choice by Gordon.
Jack Van Camp earned the win for Pierre Post 8. The pitcher allowed zero hits and zero runs over one and one-third innings, striking out three and walking one.
Lincoln Kienholz started the game for Pierre. The righty allowed four hits and three runs over five and two-thirds innings, striking out eight. Van Camp and Hinkle each collected two hits to lead Pierre.
Helleloid took the loss for Mitchell Post 18. The hurler lasted six innings, allowing six hits and four runs while striking out five. Mitchell stole seven bases during the game.
In game two, Pierre Post 8 opened up scoring in the first inning and held on to win 5-2. Bennett Dean drove in one when he hit a single.
Jack Van Camp led the Pierre victory on the hill. The pitcher allowed zero hits and one run over four innings, striking out eight. Brecken Krueger threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen. Krueger recorded the last nine outs to earn the save for Pierre.
Pierre Post 8 totaled nine hits with Jack Merkwan and Andy Gordon each having two.
Ty Neugebauer took the loss for Mitchell Post 18. The pitcher surrendered five runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out five.
