The number of people flying out of the Pierre Regional Airport has picked back up after falling to an almost complete stop in the middle of 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
City commissioner and airport liaison Jamie Huizenga says over 1000 people boarded flights in Pierre last month (May 2021).
Starting July 1, 2021, Huizenga says two companies will be providing commercial air service for Pierre– at least for now.
If SkyWest continues to serve the Pierre (and Watertown) Regional Airport, it would be considered “at risk”– meaning SkyWest would not receive a federal subsidy.
Both Denver Air Connection and SkyWest, flying as United Express, book their flights through United.
Meanwhile, work is underway on a $200,000 project to build an additional 40 parking spots northwest of the terminal, adjacent to the existing passenger parking lot. Parking is free at the Pierre Regional Airport.
