The youth competition has nine categories. Today (June 18), they’re competing in the physical fitness and mile run, three-minute impromptu speech and team leadership problem events. Tomorrow (June 19) will begin with a CAP uniform wear inspection followed by standard military drill, a uniform preparation problem, indoor and outdoor presentations of the colors and a written exam.
Cadet teams from Big Sioux Composite Squadron, Brookings; Rushmore Composite Squadron, Rapid City; and Sioux Falls Composite Squadron will be in Pierre for the state CAP competition.
Lt. Col. Linda Buechler, CAP’s South Dakota Wing director of cadets, says the goal of this competition is to promote team work. She says the top two teams will move forward to the Civil Air Patrol’s North Central Region competition this fall.
The competition will be held at the Community Bible Church (1516 N Harrison) from 8am-10:40pm Friday and 7:30am-3pm Saturday. Times for the individual competition categories are flexible, but members of the public are welcome to attend and learn about Civil Air Patrol.
CAP has over 400 members in South Dakota with units in Brookings, Custer, Miller, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish and Tea. The wing can deploy its aircraft, ground teams and small search drones to assist in emergency response and other support to local, state, tribal and federal agencies.
