The Pierre Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at approximately 1:06am today (June 18, 2021).
Chief Ian Paul says when firefighters arrived at the 2000 block of East Broadway they noted heavy smoke and fire showing from the single story residential home. He says there were two occupants home at the time of the fire and they were able to vacate before conditions intensified. The occupants were alerted to the fire when the smoke detectors alarmed.
“When we first arrived on to the incident the garage was fully engulfed in fire and was moving into the home,” said Fire Chief Ian Paul. “We were able to extinguish most of the blaze on the outside of the structure and then transitioned to an interior attack through the front door.”
The home suffered major fire damage to the single stall attached garage and moderate smoke and heat damage throughout the rest of the home. The cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious. The cause is still under investigation.
Firefighters were on scene of the fire for approximately 3 hours. Other responders on scene included Ft. Pierre Fire, AMR, and law enforcement.
