The South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs held a State Bridge Dedication Ceremony Saturday (Aug. 14, 2021) to honor Colome native and Army Combat Veteran Private Richard Bertram.
The South Dakota HWY 183 Bridge, which spans the Keya Paha River, was dedicated to PVT Bertram. He was killed in action on Okinawa Island in Japan in 1945 while serving with Company C, 382nd Infantry.
Greg Whitlock, secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, says naming bridges in honor of fallen military members gives gives us an opportunity of remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to this nation.
Naming bridges in honor of our combat veterans who died while serving their country is an initiative of Governor Kristi Noem and the South Dakota Departments of Military, Transportation, and Veterans Affairs.
