The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning until 8pm CT tonight (Aug. 17, 2021) in 10 central South Dakota counties because of gusting winds and low humidity.
Counties included in the Red Flag Warning are Hughes, Stanley, Sully, Lyman, Jones, Campbell, Corson, Dewey, Potter and Walworth.
The NWS says southeast winds at 15-25mph, gusting up to 35mph, humidity as low as 19% and triple digit temperatures combine to create favorable conditions for a fire to start easily and spread quickly.
The NWS says the Grassland Fire Danger Index is in the “very high” category this afternoon (Wed.) along the Missouri River in central South Dakota. Counties directly east of the line are in the “high” danger category, while the danger is in the “extreme” category in the counties to the west.
