The Pierre street department is wrapping up its maintenance projects for the season.
Jeff Runyan, construction and operations manager, estimates the street department resurfaced about 140 blocks this summer. He says all of those blocks were chip sealed and are now in the process of being fog sealed.
Runyan says this week’s (Aug. 30, 2021) fog sealing operation should cause few traffic disruptions and is expected to be complete by the end of next week. He says both chip and fog sealing are maintenance techniques that preserve streets by mitigating weather-related damage and improving skid resistance.
Runyan says people should still expect plenty construction zones around Pierre. He says the team will continue to do pothole work and patch sections of street as needed and major street construction will continue for several more weeks. Portions of Highland Avenue and Airport Road are both being completely rebuilt this year. They are scheduled for completion this fall.
