Tomorrow (Sept. 11, 2001) marks the 20th anniversary of the al Qaeda terrorist attacks in the United States.
19 Islamic militants hijacked four airplanes and carried out suicide attacks. Two of the planes were flown into the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, DC and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
South Dakota Senator John Thune was the state’s US Representative at the time. He chatted with DRG Media Group Pierre news and farm director Jody Heemstra this week vividly remembering where he was when he first heard something nefarious was happening.
Senator Thune and South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson will both attend a Deactivation Ceremony Saturday at 10am at Joe Foss Field in Sioux Falls to recognize the Airmen of the SD Air National Guard 114th Fighter Wing who have been deployed over the past year.
