Beginning Monday, Sept. 27, 2021, vehicle traffic won’t be allowed on the causeway that connects Pierre to LaFramboise Island. The traffic restriction is expected to remain in place for two weeks.
The temporary closure will allow a new water main to be installed in Steamboat Park between James Street and Poplar Avenue. The new water main will connect the city’s new drinking water treatment facility to the existing drinking water distribution system.
Pedestrian access to the causeway will be maintained via the walking path. Although, there will be no pedestrian access to the causeway via Poplar Avenue.
Additionally, during the water main installation, the amphitheater, causeway, and Poplar Ave. parking lots will be closed.
In June 2018, Pierre voters approved a $37.5 million project to build a drinking water treatment facility. The new treatment process will pull surface water from the Missouri River. Pierre’s current drinking water comes from a well system fed by an underground aquifer.
The new treatment facility is on track to be complete by the end of 2022.
