PIERRE – A new era will begin for Pierre Governor boys basketball Friday with the first game under new head coach Brianna Kusler, the first female head coach of a South Dakota AA boys program. Pierre, 7-13 in 2020-21, will open the season against Rapid City Stevens at Carrold Heier Gymnasium Friday, then play at Rapid City Central on Saturday.
Kusler replaces Terry Becker, who stepped away after last season, his 17th as the Governors’ head coach.
Pierre returns, among others, second-team AA All-State player Lincoln Kienholz, who averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season.
Kusler was asked what it is like to be a head coach.
Kusler has already seen improvement with the Governors.
Kusler is stressing that Pierre should have a solid defense.
Kienholz and Jackson Edman should provide offense for the Governors, and Kusler discussed who else may do so.
Kusler expects help off the bench.
There shouldn’t be a drop-off when going to the bench, according to Kusler.
Kusler is sure that the Governors have plenty of depth.
Kusler thinks that Pierre will have to play at its best for chances to win consistently.
Pierre will play at Rapid City Stevens on Friday. Coverage will begin at 7:30 CT on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7. Live and archived video also will be available at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com. Brian Oakland will call the action. Saturday’s game at Rapid City Central will air at 2:30 CT on River 92.7.
