PIERRE – After dropping nine of their first 12 games, Pierre Governor Girls Basketball finished the regular season by winning seven of their last eight to finish at 10-10 and earn the ninth seed in the AA SoDak 16, where they will play at Sioux Falls Jefferson on Friday.
Governor Head Coach Kirk Beebout said that no matter what happens on Friday, his team has worked hard to make it to this point.
Beebout said that a most important element of his team is its defense, which has held seven opponents to 40 points or less.
Pierre defeated Jefferson a week ago Tuesday in Sioux Falls. Beebout was asked if there is an advantage to playing the Cavaliers again so soon.
Beebout expects Jefferson to work its defense hard right from the start of Friday’s game.
Beebout said that the win over Jefferson was one over a quite talented team.
The Governor boys, who play Saturday in the SoDak 16, also at Jefferson, are coming over to Sioux Falls Friday to cheer on the girls. Beebout thinks that’s great.
A state tournament bid will be at stake in this game, but Beebout said that it’s crucial not to make the game anything more than it should be.
The 10 wins are the most for the Governor girls since their last season to make the AA state tournament, 2016-17. Coverage of Friday’s game will begin at 6:30 PM on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, with live and archived video at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com. Brian Oakland will call the action.
