A mental health situation was resolved with no injuries after a person threatened to harm themself by falling from the train bridge over the Missouri River between Pierre and Fort Pierre shortly before 4pm yesterday (March 29, 2022).
Information from the Pierre Police Department says they received a report of a person on the bridge. Upon arrival, officers located the person on the railing underneath the bridge. After making contact, the person told the officer of their intent to harm themself. The officer spent over 15 minutes speaking with them and ultimately convinced them to return above the structure. The person was then transported to Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre for treatment.
Assisting the Pierre Police Department were the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, Stanley County Sheriff’s Office, the Pierre Fire Department’s Rescue and Dive Team and AMR ambulance service.
