Pierre resident Mary Weinheimer is one of four candidates running for the District 24 House seat.
Weinheimer joins a republican primary field that includes incumbents Mike Weisgram and Will Mortenson and fellow challenger Jim Sheehan.
Weinheimer, a lifelong Pierre resident, says as a wife, mom, small businesswoman and farmer, she sees firsthand the “cultural and economic threats to our families and our community.” She says she believes the legislature needs more representatives with the vision and courage to face those challenges head-on.
Weinheimer and her husband Mark have been married for over 23 years and have five kids. They are full-time farmers in Sully County, though she does occasionally help at her family’s business, Morris Inc. in Fort Pierre.
On the District 24 Senate side, incumbent Mary Duvall faces a republican primary challenge in Jim Mehlhaff. The filing deadline has passed and no democrats turned in petitions to run for either the House or Senate in District 24. Independents can turn in petitions until April 26, 2022.
This will be the first election after the redistricting process set new legislative boundaries in South Dakota. District 24 now includes Haakon County along with Hughes, Hyde, Stanley and Sully counties.
The primary election will be held June 7, 2022. Early voting starts April 22, 2022.
