About a half dozen fire departments were called to a grass fire west of Fort Pierre around mid-afternoon on Friday (April 8, 2022).
Fort Pierre Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief Tye Odden says the fire was about 15 miles out of town, off of Highway 14/34.
While the wind speed on Friday was less than it had been earlier in the week, Odden says given the extremely dry conditions and low humidity, the 15mph or so breeze was more than enough to get the fire moving.
Odden says the landscape worked in their favor.
If you happen to see an unattended grass fire, Odden says call 911 to get emergency responders on their way as soon as possible.
Also assisting with the fire response were Cone Ag and Cody Briggs delivering water to refill trucks, AMR Ambulance and the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office.
Crews were on scene for about 3.5 hours. The fire is still under investigation.
