South Dakota senators will begin hearing evidence this morning (8am June 21, 2022) for the impeachment of Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg for his conduct surrounding a 2020 car crash in which he struck and killed a pedestrian.
District 24 Senator Mary Duvall of Pierre says the state’s first impeachment trial will be held in the Senate Chambers in the Capitol Building.
Duvall says they’ll be considering the two Articles of Impeachment issued by the members of the state House of Representatives.
Duvall says while the entire impeachment process is new to everyone, the Senators do have an outline of how the potentially-two-day-long trial will be conducted.
Duvall says there will also be time for Senators to ask questions after they hear from impeachment prosecutors, defense attorneys, crash investigators and former members of Ravnsborg’s staff as lawmakers decide whether to remove the Republican attorney general from office.
The House set the stage for the trial this spring, deciding that Ravnsborg made misleading statements about the crash and misused his office during the investigation.
