Beginning Tuesday (Aug. 16, 2022) those who use the City of Pierre’s garbage collection service will have their trash picked up a little earlier.
Solid Waste Superintendent Val Keller says this is mostly a scheduling change on their end to make the collection route more efficient. She says customers shouldn’t experience much of a difference other than the trash could disappear from their curb a little sooner.
Pierre will continue to collect trash from its residential customers on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just as before, trash should be put on the curb by 6am on collection day. With the scheduling change, Keller expects trash collection to be complete by 3pm rather than 4pm.
Keller says as always, if one of our customers misses the truck, they can bring their bag to the Solid Waste Facility on East Park for no additional cost.
The City only serves residential customers and uses a pay as you use system for trash collection. That means customers pay by the bag. Heavy duty trash bags can be purchased at City Hall or at the City’s Solid Waste Facility. All bags are 33 gallons; 25 bags can be purchased for $59 or 10 bags for $26.50. The bag cost includes the disposal and collection fee.
There are three other private garbage collection services in Pierre. Nothing about their service changes as a result of the City’s schedule change.
The City of Pierre accepts 23,000 tons of material at its Solid Waste Facility each year. That includes all the trash the City collects, as well as that brought in by commercial haulers, individuals, and businesses that drop off garbage or rubble materials.
