HERREID – Herreid/Selby Area has continued to roll over opponents on their way to Friday’s 9B semifinal game in Herreid. But the 10-0 Wolverines know a unique challenge could await them.
Irene-Wakonda, the 12th seed, has won road games over Corsica-Stickney and Sully Buttes to make it to this game. The wins improved the Eagles to 5-5, but note that they played very difficult regular season opponents which included Hanson, Gregory, Howard and Alcester-Hudson. In fact, Irene-Wakonda didn’t play a 9B opponent until the playoffs. The Eagles feature a dual-threat quarterback in Dashell Spurrell and pass-catching tight end Miles Pollman, who also came up with the biggest defensive stop last week, stopping Sully Buttes quarterback Landon Hepker on a fourth-and-one with just under three minutes left, after which Irene-Wakonda gained two first downs and ran the clock out.
H/SA Head Coach Clayton Randall said that this Irene-Wakonda team reminds him of a very recent Wolverine team.
Randall said that Irene-Wakonda is capable and versatile on offense.
2,000-yard rusher Brenden Begeman and quarterback Tray Hettick make the H/SA offense go. Randall said that his offense’s plan won’t change.
Herreid/Selby Area will meet Irene-Wakonda in Herreid on Friday, with the winner advancing to the 9B championship game next Thursday at the DakotaDome. H/SA will look to be in a championship game for the third time in four seasons. Coverage of Friday’s game will begin at 5:30 PM on 100.7 KMLO, the KMLO page at the DRG News app and at drgnews.com/kmlo, with live and archived video available. KC Meiners will call the action.
