PIERRE – Pierre Governor Football looks to make another trip to the DakotaDome and make South Dakota high school football history, but first, the 10-0 Governors are set to meet Yankton in an 11AA semifinal game Friday night at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium.
Pierre defeated Sturgis 42-14 on October 27 in a first-round game at home. Yankton (6-4) dominated Brookings, winning 49-14 as quarterback Rugby Ryken passed for three touchdowns and ran for three more.
Nearly two months have passed since these teams’ regular season game, a 55-10 Pierre win for Homecoming on September 16. Governor Head Coach Steve Steele said that a lot has changed since then for both teams.
Steele expects Yankton to show some things on offense that they didn’t show in September.
Steele said that the Governors’ offense was patient in last week’s game against Sturgis.
Among players who have been injured and should play Friday include tight end Jackson Edman, who has been out since breaking a collarbone in September.
Pierre quarterback Lincoln Kienholz has 8,483 passing yards for his career, the most for any 11-man quarterback ever in South Dakota. He needs 184 yards to tie the all-time state record, set by 9-man player Cody Thompson at Lemmon/McIntosh from 2017-19.
A win would send Pierre to the 11AA championship game on November 12 and the opportunity to play for a sixth consecutive state championship, which would tie the record set by West Central, who won six straight 11A championships between 2000-05.
Coverage of Pierre and Yankton will begin Friday at 6:25 PM on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7, at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app and at drgnews.com/river, with live and archived video available. Brian Oakland will call the action.
