SIOUX FALLS – Pierre was better than before against Jefferson, but again, the Cavaliers were just too much.
Pierre Governor Volleyball fell to Sioux Falls Jefferson Thursday in four sets in the first round of the SDHSAA Class AA State Volleyball Tournament at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center, 25-14, 24-26, 25-21, 25-21.
Jefferson swept Pierre in the Governors’ final regular season match on November 1, and Jefferson (24-6) played as they did that night in the first set on Thursday, taking a 25-14 win.
The Governors (16-6) then rallied for a 26-24 win in the second set with the help of a good blocking game.
Set three went to Jefferson 25-21 and the Cavaliers zoomed to a 16-9 lead in the fourth set before Pierre came within a point. Jefferson then closed out the match.
Cadence Nuttbrock led Jefferson with 13 kills. Emory Brosnahan and Ella Kvernmo each scored 10. Brooke Bowen had three aces and Jefferson had eight blocks as a team.
Reese Terwilliger led the Governors in scoring with 12 kills, two solo blocks and seven block assists. Lily Sanchez had eight kills, two aces, two block assists and 18 set assists. Ayvrie Kaiser and MaKenna Schlekeway had six kills each. As a team, Pierre had 15 blocks.
Pierre teams have now dropped 14 straight state tournament matches. The Governors last won at state in the semifinal round in 2008.
