SIOUX FALLS – A Pierre Governor team that appeared to be close to losing its way not long ago now has one more home game, thanks to a sterling effort against the number-one AA boys team.
Ben Heisler scored a career-high 26 points Monday as the Governors upset top-ranked Jefferson 84-73 at Jefferson High School.
Heisler was 11-of-12 from the floor and also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked two shots.
Jackson Edman scored 24 with six rebounds and four assists and was 10-of-12 on free throws. Lincoln Kienholz scored 19 points with nine rebounds, two steals and a block.
Pierre (13-7) took the lead early in the game and kept up the pressure with 57% shooting from the field and 22-of-28 on free throws.
The win was more satisfying for Pierre, considering that the Governors lost a 19-point lead in a 79-74 double overtime loss at Jefferson last March.
For the first time, Pierre will host a boys AA SoDak 16 game Saturday. The sixth-seed Governors will host 11th seed O’Gorman, who won in Pierre 68-64 on January 27. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM on Saturday, and coverage will begin at 2:30 PM on on The Official Voice of the Pierre Governors, River 92.7. Live and archived video also will be available at the River 92.7 page at the DRG News app & drgnews.com.
