ABERDEEN – White River’s two most experienced players led the way Thursday to give the Tigers another state tournament shot at Lower Brule.
Joe Sayler scored 24 points with six rebounds and Nic Marshall scored 21 points with seven assists as White River shot well from the start in a 72-56 first-round victory over Faith in the SDHSAA Boys Class B State Tournament at Northern State University’s Barnett Center.
Faith led twice in the first three minutes, then White River put together a 19-4 run over the next six minutes plus and led by 12 midway through the second quarter. The Longhorns came as close as five with three and a half minutes left in the third quarter before Faith put the game away with a 19-5 run.
White River (20-4), who qualified for this tournament for the 18th straight year, also had 11 points from Evastine Wright. The Tigers hit on 55 percent of their shots (28-51).
Caden Selby and Jackson Schuaer led Faith (22-2) with 15 points each.
On Friday, White River will play in the semifinal against Lower Brule, who defeated Castlewood 67-55 on Thursday. This will be a rematch of last year’s incredible semifinal game, won by Lower Brule 86-83 in three overtimes.
