The Indigent Legal Services Task Force created during this year’s (2023) Legislative session in South Dakota is holding listening sessions across the state to gather information to inform its work.
State Court Administrator Greg Sattizahn says the group has several goals.
He says the task force is made up of a variety of stakeholders.

A listening session is being held today (May 24, 2023) from 10am-noon CT at Cedar Shores in Oacoma. Other upcoming sessions will be held in Timber Lake, Pierre, Vermillion and Huron. A virtual session will also be held.
Meetings have already been held in Aberdeen, Sisseton, Hot Springs and Sturgis.

The goal of this Task Force as stated in the legislation is to:
- Identify how legal services are delivered in South Dakota to indigent parties in criminal, juvenile and child abuse and neglect proceedings statewide;
- Recommend ways to improve the delivery of legal services to indigent parties;
- Recommend methods to provide services for conflict cases where local public defenders may be unable to take cases;
- Address how to ensure competent representation is provided to indigent parties; and
- Identify potential funding options to ensure delivery of legal services for indigent parties.
