Today (Aug. 7, 2023) is “Purple Heart Recognition Day” in South Dakota and across the US.
The Purple Heart medal is the nation’s oldest military honor, dating back to 1782. It’s awarded to those service members who have been wounded or killed as a result of enemy action while serving in the US military.
According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, more than 1.8 million Purple Heart medals have been presented to military men and women.
Greg Whitlock, Secretary of the South Dakota Department of Veterans Affairs, says every day, America’s service members put their lives on the line to keep us safe. He says it’s important for all Americans to learn the history of this military award and the sacrifices made by the recipients.
