PIERRE – In 2022, Pierre was able to top 11AAA opponent Brandon Valley. But on Friday, the Lynx used their size to get back at the Governors.
Levi Veskrna rushed for 263 yards on 43 carries and three touchdowns Friday as Brandon Valley overwhelmed Pierre 35-14 at Hollister Field at Phil Trautner Stadium, ending the Governors’ 20-game winning streak, the longest active win streak in South Dakota high school football.
Veskrna gave the Lynx a 7-0 lead with a one-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter.
Quarterback Jack Thue ran in a seven-yard touchdown early in the second quarter and Brandon Valley led 14-0.
Pierre’s Cade Kaiser threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Jett Zabel nearly midway through the second quarter to cut the Brandon Valley lead to 14-7.
Veskrna then had touchdown runs of 30 and two yards later in the second quarter and Brandon Valley led 28-7 at halftime.
The Lynx (4-2) extended the lead to 35-7 in the fourth quarter with a 11-yard scoring pass from Thue to Dveyoun Bonwell-Witte.
Kaiser threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Zabel in the fourth quarter for Pierre (5-1).
Brandon Valley used its big offensive line to rush for 313 yards.
Pierre, who was limited to 35 yards rushing.
Kaiser was 16-of-26 passing for 228 yards and two touchdowns, but he was intercepted once and was sacked four times.
Zabel had five receptions for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
The last previous loss for Pierre had been a 21-14 defeat to Brookings at home on October 21, 2021, the final game for the Governors in that regular season. Pierre then won the 11AA championship, went 12-0 last season in winning their sixth straight title and won their first five games this season.
