OCTOBER 2023:
A 56 year old man from Gregory has been sentenced to 50 years in prison, with 20 years suspended, after he earlier pled guilty but mentally ill to one count of first-degree manslaughter.
Alec J. Dostal, Sr., was sentenced Friday (Oct. 13, 2023) in Gregory County Circuit Court. He was indicted following a Feb. 5, 2022 incident where the vehicle he was driving collided with a John Deere side-by-side in Burke. One person in the side-by-side died in the crash.
South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says test results showed that Dostal, Sr. was driving drunk at the time of the crash. He had five prior DUI convictions, including two felony convictions.
Agencies involved in investigating the incident were the South Dakota Highway Patrol and the Gregory County Sheriff’s Office.
Prosecution of the case was handled by the Attorney General’s Office and the Gregory County State’s Attorney’s Office.
FEBRUARY 8, 2022:
A 63 year old man from Dallas, SD, has been identified as the person killed late Saturday morning (11:43am, Feb. 5, 2022) in a two-vehicle crash in Gregory County.
Preliminary crash information indicates 54 year old Alec Dostal of Gregory was driving a 1996 Jeep Cherokee southbound on Second Street in Dallas, SD, when it rear-ended a southbound 2013 John Deere Gator UTV. The driver, Samuel Hoffart, was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Dostal was not injured, but charges are pending against him.
South Dakota’s Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
FEBRUARY 7, 2022:
One person died late Saturday morning (11:43am, Feb. 5, 2022) in a two-vehicle crash in Gregory County.
Names of the two people involved are not yet being released.
Preliminary crash information indicates that a 1996 Jeep Cherokee was southbound on Second Street in Dallas, SD, when it rear-ended a southbound 2013 John Deere Gator UTV. The 54-year-old male driver of the Jeep was not injured. Charges are pending against the driver.
