CORSICA – With their head coach sidelined and a five-game losing streak, prospects were bleak for Potter County Football earlier this month. Now, the Battlers are soaring into the 9B semifinals.
Landon Larson’s third touchdown pass of the game, a four-yard play to Jhett Simon with 2:14 left, gave Potter County a 24-20 win at Corsica/Stickney Thursday in the 9B quarterfinal.
Vern Smith, the veteran Potter County head coach, was on the sideline after missing several games due to cancer treatment. His Battlers (5-5), the 11th seed, have now won playoff road games at Dell Rapids St. Mary and Corsica/Stickney.
A blocked punt with 4:53 left set up the winning score for Potter County.
Larson threw a tying touchdown pass late in the second quarter, a 37-yarder to Chance Smith.
On the second play of the second half, Larson found Ryder Falkenhagen for a 68-yard touchdown and gave Potter County a 16-8 lead.
Corsica/Stickney came back on their next possession with a 22-yard touchdown run by Carter Wright, but missed the two-point conversion and kept Potter County in the lead at 16-14.
Tate Tolsma then gave the Jaguars (7-3) a 20-14 lead 50 seconds into the fourth quarter with a three-yard touchdown run.
Potter County will play at Faulkton Area on Friday, November 3 in the semifinal round. Faulkton Area, the second seed, defeated Kadoka Area 48-0 in Faulkton on Thursday.
