PIERRE – When Pierre Governor Girls Basketball last played the Stevens Raiders in the first round of the state tournament last March, Pierre’s defense gave Stevens a rough time. This time, an emerging Raider star gave most of the punishment.
Taaliyah Porter scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds Friday as Stevens spoiled Pierre’s home opener, winning 63-35 at the Riggs High Gym.
Porter scored 17 of her points in the first half, including seven in the first quarter as Stevens (2-0) stormed to a 20-4 lead after eight minutes. Pierre made only one of 13 first-quarter field goals.
Ryann Barry scored 12 for the Governors (0-1). Reese Terwilliger tallied nine points.
Finley Love added nine for Stevens. Transfer post player Thomiah Poor Bear, who played last season at Kadoka Area, had eight points and seven rebounds.
