WATERTOWN, S.D. — In a rare girls and boys basketball double-header (Dec. 19, 2023), the Pierre Governor girls basketball team easily won their fourth straight game, while the boys had a 3-game winning streak snapped by the Watertown Arrows. Pierre led the girls game 19-16 after one quarter, but dominated the middle periods to blow out the Arrows, 57-33. Reese Terwilliger tossed in 20 points and Lennix Dupris added 13 to lead the Governor attack. Pierre outscored the Arrows 36-8 in the second and third periods to key the win. Miranda Falconer paced Watertown with 15 points.
In the nightcap the Governor boys could not make a 24-20 halftime lead hold up, as Watertown came from behind for a 43-40 win. Kohen Kranz hit three 3-pointers in the second half to spur the comeback. Caden Beauchamp scored 11 and Kranz 10 to lead a balanced effort. Luke Olson led all scorers with 15 and Jett Zabel added 10 for the Govs. Pierre had a chance to send the game to overtime, but a Dawson Getz 3-pointer would not go. Pierre will put the Governors Cups on the line in their next action on Dec. 30 when they play Bismarck. The boys will head north while the girls will host the Demons in afternoon contests.
