South Dakota corn growers intend to plant 6.00 million acres this year, down 5% from 2023, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
Soybean producers expect to plant 5.20 million acres, up 2% from last year.
All hay acreage to be harvested is expected to total 3.00 million acres, up 2% from last year’s acreage.
Winter wheat acres seeded in the fall of 2023 are estimated at 870,000, down 5% from last year.
Other spring wheat planting intentions are 850,000 acres, up 15% from last year.
Sunflower producers expect to plant 350,000 acres, down 29% from 2023. Oil varieties account for 310,000 acres, down 32% from a year ago. Non-oil varieties made up the balance at 40,000 acres, unchanged from a year ago.
Oat intentions are estimated at 280,000 acres, up 6% from last year.
Barley producers intend to plant 45,000 acres, up 18% from last year.
Sorghum growers intend to plant 365,000 acres, up 9% from a year ago.
Estimates in this report are based on a survey conducted during the first two weeks of March.
