The Mobridge-Pollock High School girl’s varsity softball team is off to a hot start in its second year of existence. After a 4-9 inaugural campaign last season, the Tigers are 2-0 in 2024 after sweeping a doubleheader against Winner Area on Saturday. The much improved team, who went 0-4 against Winner Area last year, walloped the Warriors at home 25-10 in game 1, and 21-1 in game 2.
Junior Grace Overland, the daughter of coaches Andrew and Heather Overland, was one of the many bright spots for Mobridge-Pollock as a two-way player. From inside the circle, Overland pitched the entirety of both games, earning two victories in the process. As a hitter, she was a combined 4-for-6 at the plate, with five runs scored and six runs batted in. Sophomore Jacy Netterville was 5-for-7 batting in the leadoff spot with six runs scored. With 26 total runs scored in just six innings at-bat, nearly everybody in the lineup had a fantastic day.
Despite a 15-run win in the first game, it was in doubt early. Going to the bottom of the third inning, the Tigers were trailing 9-1. That’s when Mobridge-Pollock kicked into gear, plating eight in the bottom of the third, and 16 more in the fourth to end the game in a run-rule.
Winner Area looked to have run out of gas in the second game, allowing 12 runs in the first inning, and 10 more in the second. The Warriors walked 15 batters in just two innings of that contest, after walking 13 in game one.
With two games Monday in Redfield being postponed for weather, Mobridge-Pollock will take the field next on Friday afternoon against Beulah High School. Beulah comes from North Dakota, where they won the Class B state championship last season with a 28-1 record. They played Mobridge-Pollock twice last spring, defeating the Tigers 17-0, and later 15-3. Friday’s game will be at the softball complex in Mobridge, with first pitch at 4 p.m. CT, April 12.
