The Pierre City Commission has approved (Dec. 3, 2024) a plan to replat a portion of Riverside Cemetery.
City Planner Emeline Post says the impacted area is located in the southwest corner of the city-owned cemetery, just past the west entrance. She says the desire for the replat follows a request by a community member to purchase one of the plots in that area.
Post says the existing plats have been in place since 1988 and didn’t fully consider the topography of the area. She says the replat straightens out a curve to create a better functioning layout for the burial sites in that area and expands the usable space of the cemetery by correcting nearly 70 plots.
The replat was previously reviewed and recommended for approval by the City Planning Commission.
Riverside Cemetery, established in the late 1800s, is owned and operated by the City of Pierre. It currently has 35 acres of developed land and an additional 25 acres of undeveloped space. The cemetery averages between 70 and 75 burials each year and sells between 40 and 50 burial sites annually.
