Thursday night saw the first west river road trip of the season for Mobridge-Pollock basketball, going into Belle Fourche to face off with the Broncs for a doubleheader. Two Tigers wins gave them something to celebrate on the voyage back to Mobridge. The girls were victorious in a 58-39 rout, and the boys survived 56-47. The girls game was a matchup between two of class-A’s better teams, both squads came in with 11 wins. It did not quite play out that way, as Mobridge-Pollock went for the jugular early, jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead that would grow to 21-9 by the end of the first quarter. The Broncs fought back with a run of their own in the second, to shave the deficit to eight points at halftime. The final two quarters saw a stifling Mobridge-Pollock defense that held Belle Fourche to 14 total points in the last 16 minutes of the game, leading the Lady Tigers to a 19-point win over a quality opponent on the road.
The team was without senior Charley Henderson for the first time this season, she sprained her ankle last Saturday against Centerville, and did not play Thursday due to injury. The Lady Tigers opted with four listed guards in the starting lineup, 5’8″ guard Blake Thompson took the opening tip-off. With the absence of Henderson, Mobridge-Pollock relied heavily on junior Tegan Konold, who scored 18 points in one of her best offensive performances this season. Junior Jacy Netterville made her first start since December, adding six points on two made triples. Lady Tigers are now 12-2 this season, and play next on Tuesday at home against Timber Lake.
The boys of Mobridge-Pollock won an ugly one, 56-47, for their fifth victory in a row. Points were nearly impossible to come by in the beginning, Broncs clung to a 9-6 lead after one quarter. The script was completely flipped in the second quarter, with 24 Tiger points to put them ahead by 10 at the break. That lead came in handy, as a 27-26 second half score kept the game in question deep into the fourth quarter. The Broncs would draw as close as within three points in the later goings.
Sophomore Kale Knudson set a season-high scoring mark with 17 points to lead the team. It capped off a great week for him, that included a key 15 points in a rivalry win over Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Tuesday. On defense, senior Shane Henderson brought the block party to Belle Fourche, constantly denying the Broncs shots under the rim. Mobridge-Pollock boys are now 10-3, and their winning streak is helping them make a strong mid-season push at first place in the region. Their next game is a road tilt with 10-4 Aberdeen Christian on Monday night to cap off a three-game road trip.
Mobridge-Pollock was set to play a doubleheader on Saturday against Todd County, but those games have been postponed due to weather. The new date for that meeting with the Falcons in Mobridge is Monday, February 17.
