In a matchup of two teams that reached the 6B regional semifinals a season ago, the Potter County Lady Battlers and Highmore-Harrold met Tuesday night in the quarterfinal. The Pirates hosted the game as the regions top-seeded team, and despite some early trouble, would defeat Potter County 61-49. The Lady Battlers gave Highmore-Harrold a fight early, scoring on quick drives and cracking down defensively on the Pirates inside attack. By the end of the first half, Potter County was ahead 28-26.
That was the closest to victory they would get, as Highmore-Harrold dominated the third quarter 22-9 en route to the win. Their post offense that had been shut down late in the first half came back to life, and by game’s end, freshman forward Jada Baloun scored 25 points. Pirates freshman Elle Stagg added 11 points along with the highlight of the night. In the third quarter, she dropped a defender to the floor with a crossover dribble, and proceeded to score a basket through a Potter County foul.
Lady Battlers freshman Finlee Heien finished with 17 points, and was their biggest form of offense in the first half. Their season ends at 9-12, but they graduate only one senior from their roster. Highmore-Harrold will be seeking a SoDak 16 bid at home Thursday, when they face Herreid/Selby Area.
