The South Dakota Senate approved multiple bills Thursday (Feb. 27, 2025) during a two-hour floor session.
Senators passed:
- House Bill 1026 appropriates more than $13 million to repair and replace the Richmond Dam and spillway in Brown County. Officials warn that it threatens 1,800 lives if it fails.
- House Bill 1071 allows physician assistants with 6,000 hours of clinical experience to practice independently without direct physician supervision.
- House Bill 1092 allows student teacher stipend program creating $5,000 grants for school districts
- House Bill 1097 extends the time limit for out-of-state physicians to train in South Dakota from one day to 90 days.
- House Bill 1024 increasing Secretary of State fees
- House Bill 1051 updating legislative oversight of administrative rules
- House Bill 1157 increasing county drainage permit fees
Senators defeated House Bill 1261, which would have given county commissioners authority over certain township rights-of-way.
The Senate deferred action until Monday (March 3, 2024) on:
- House Bill 1196 regarding unclaimed property
- House Joint Resolution 5001 on Medicaid expansion
- House Joint Resolution 5002 on congressional term limits
- House Bill 1131 for state capitol restoration
- House Bill 1114 for technical education equipment funding
