A newly remodeled nursing simulation lab located at Capital City Campus in Pierre was showcased during an open house earlier this week (April 14, 2026).
The Nursing program at Capital City Campus is provided through Lake Area Technical College in Watertown.
Lake Area President Tiffany Sanderson said the lab’s new equipment provides an environment that replicates clinical situations through the use of advanced manikins, high-tech medical equipment and immersive simulations. She said this expansion allows Lake Area Tech to expand access to healthcare education in central South Dakota.
Students complete all classroom instruction in Pierre and make a limited number of trips to Watertown for skills checks. The nursing simulation lab renovation was made possible through a grant from Avera Health.
Shantel Krebs is Regional President and CEO of Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre. She said Avera’s investment is about more than increasing the number of nursing professionals in the state.
Lake Area Tech offers both an LPN and an RN program at Capital City Campus.
