The Special Olympics will host their Opening Ceremonies Thursday night in Spearfish welcoming athletes from all across the state to compete in a multitude of different events.
One of the longstanding traditions is the torch makes its way periodically across South Dakota, and on Wednesday and Thursday morning it made its appearance in Pierre.
Tuesday was the torch walk through Hilgers Gulch which saw a huge crowd of law enforcement, Special Olympics athletes and supporters from surrounding areas come together to carry the torch together ahead of the games.

The following morning, local law enforcement and a few Wildcat athletes made their annual run with the torch from the DCI building down to the Capitol where they were greeted by Governor Larry Rhoden. Rhoden addressed the group expressing his support of all that was taking place around Special Olympics and law enforcement’s involvement.
