Pierre resident Tim Rounds officially announced his candidacy for the District 24 House of Representatives this week (May 11, 2026).
He’s one of five republicans on the June primary ballot competing for two spots to represent people living in all of Sully, Stanley and Haakon counties as well as the vast majority of Hughes and Hyde counties.
Rounds previously served 16 years in the House, with his most recent term ending in 2020. He said he didn’t intend to run again, but with the “inter-party turmoil” that’s occurred the past few years, Rounds believes he can “bring some unity and more respect among well-meaning legislators who have the same goals for South Dakota, but differing paths to get there.”
During his previous terms, Rounds was Chairman of the House Local Government Committee, Chairman of the House Retirement Laws Committee and 10 years as the Chairman of the House Commerce and Energy Committee. He also served on the House Transportation and Health and Human Services Committees. He was a respected legislator known for bringing differing parties together to get things done.
Among Rounds’ priorities are:
- Protecting the sanctity of life
- Protecting the Second Amendment
- Taking Care of Our State Employees
- Education
- Economic Development
Born and raised in Pierre, Rounds says he learned at an early age the value of work and responsibility. “Having 10 siblings we had to work to have spending money, so I delivered papers, mowed lawns, shoveled snow, and did janitor work.”
