After falling to the Lynx in the regular season 15-0, the Pierre Governors knew they would have an uphill battle to fight against Brandon Valley in the #4 vs. #13 matchup of the SoDak 16. The Govs would send out their ace, McKenzi Flottmeyer to give them the best chance at pulling the upset, but knew offense would be needed as well.
Flottmeyer was already having a good day after being named to the ESD All-Conference team earlier in the afternoon, and she built on that by having a strong start stringing together strong innings and keeping the door open for a Govs comeback. Taryn Spruill would squeak a hit through the infield and put the Govs ahead 2-1. Through four innings, Flottmeyer allowed just a few hits and one run, but the Lynx offense would not be held down as they were able to build a five-run, 7-2 lead thanks to their potent offense.
The Govs would not go down quietly as Jordyn Kirkie would register a huge hit for Pierre to score two and whittle down the lead. Then, first basemen Micah Buffalo would rattle in an RBI single followed by an Alivia Heyman sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to two.
The Govs would leave a few runners (including the tying run) stranded and Brandon Valley would hold on and white-knuckle it to the finish to earn the win and earn a spot in the state tournament. They will go onto face Roosevelt in the first round.
Pierre finishes the season 5-14.
