The Black Hills National Forest will implement temporary road and area closures during the Mount Rushmore National Memorial fireworks show. The closures will include Breezy Point and Wrinkled Rock Recreation Areas, their access roads (National Forest System Roads 442, and 442.1A) and Lafferty Gulch Road (National Forest System Road 751). The closure will be in effect from July 2 through July 3, 2026.
The closures are part of a coordinated plan with the state and local agencies and the fireworks contractor to manage traffic, ensure visitor safety, and protect the memorial and surrounding environment. Mount Rushmore National Memorial and South Dakota Department of Transportation plan additional closures which can be found on their websites; please reference these sites when making travel plans.
The closure exempts individuals with a permit specific authorizing entry and personnel from organized rescue or firefighting forces performing official duties.
Closure notices, signs and flagging will be posted at access points, and a barricade will be placed on the closed roads. All signage and barriers will be removed at the end of the closure period.
The Fireworks Closure Order No. BKF-193-2026 including the map, is available on the Black Hills National Forest website. For more information on the Black Hills National Forest, visit https://www.fs.usda.gov/r02/blackhills.
