Northern State University and Avera have built a simulation lab for nursing program students to learn skills that prepare them for careers in healthcare without leaving the Aberdeen region.
Located in Northern’s new Business and Health Innovation Center, the Avera Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art nursing education facility designed to provide nursing program students with hands-on learning experiences.
Dr. Alan LaFave, president of Northern State University, said Avera’s partnership was essential to making NSU’s nursing program a reality. He said the Avera Simulation Center is a remarkable teaching facility— one that gives students the hands-on experience they need to be ready for the realities of patient care.
The advanced technology enhances the students’ training by providing an environment that replicates clinical situations through the use of advanced manikins, high-tech medical equipment and immersive simulations.
Dr. Lyncee Monson, associate dean of nursing at Northern State University, said the demand for nurses in South Dakota has never been higher. She said thanks to Avera’s support, Northern has the technology, the training tools and the clinical partnerships to make sure their graduates are ready to step into the workforce with confidence.
Northern’s nursing program has expanded to include an LPN to BSN pathway, providing licensed practical nurses the opportunity to advance their education and earn a bachelor’s degree.
Dan Bjerknes, Avera St. Luke’s Regional President and Chief Executive Officer, said the partnership with Northern gives students access to a world-class simulation center. He said it will hopefully translate into more highly trained nurses choosing to build their careers in northeastern South Dakota.
