July 24, 2026:
In response to the triple digit temperatures in the forecast this weekend (July 25-27, 2026), the City of Pierre will again open a cooling center at the Griffin Park Storm Shelter.
Mayor Todd Johnson says anyone needing a safe, air-conditioned place to get relief from the heat is welcome to use the facility.
For those unsure of where the Griffin Park Storm Shelter is located….
The approximately 2,400-square-foot facility can accommodate up to 400 people and includes restroom facilities. Residents are encouraged to stop in to cool down, but people using the facility are asked to help keep the space clean by disposing of trash and respecting the building, so it remains available for everyone who needs it.
The storm shelter/cooling center is located at 703 S. Washington Avenue, near the tennis courts in Griffin Park. It’s open from 11a.m. to 10p.m. CT.
Bottled water donations are welcome and may be dropped off at the shelter during operating hours.

The storm shelter/cooling center is located at 703 S. Washington Avenue, near the tennis courts in Griffin Park. It’s open Monday through Thursday (July 13-16) from 11a.m. to 10p.m. CT, providing a safe, air-conditioned place for anyone needing relief from the heat.
