Though we are only a handful of games into the season, today’s doubleheader feels like it carries a lot of weight for both the boys and girls Governors teams. And to be fair, carries importance for the Kernels as well.
The Pierre boys are still searching for their first win on the season. To say they have gone through a gauntlet to start the season would be an understatement. They fell to a state finalist from a year ago in Sioux Falls Jefferson in game one, played the potent Watertown Arrows close in a 2-0 loss that saw the Governors lock in after two quick scores. Those two losses followed by two gritty draws has placed Pierre at 0-2-2 on the year and has made today’s match against 2-2 Mitchell seemingly a “must-win”. Sean Blanchette’s team has played some good soccer thus far against some great opponents, however, the Govs need to turn that solid play into a victory.
On the girls side, the Governor Girls are looking to do something they haven’t done in many, many years, start 5-0-0. They have had great starts through five games in their program’s history, however there has either been one loss or a tie mixed into those stints. A year ago, they started 6-0-1 with their draw coming against Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Two years ago, they started 6-1-0 with their loss coming to Rapid City Stevens. With a win today, it will be their first undefeated start through five games in recent history. They will have to acheive this feat by beating the Kernels who have started 3-1-0 on the year, so it will certainly be an exciting clash between two of the classifications top teams.
Coverage for this doubleheader will begin at 3:30 PM CT today on River 92.7 with the boys game scheduled for 4:00 PM and the girls scheduled for 6:00 PM. You can also watch today’s game live on DRGnews.com/river/.
