Tuesday marked the final home series for Pierre Governor Girls and Boys soccer before a long stretch of games away the PILC. In the regular season, they will only play once more at home, so it was important to take advantage of playing on their own grass.
The undefeated girls took the lead and picked up their seventh straight win to start the year with a 1-0 bout with the Bobcats. The lone goal came on a corner kick from Ivy Flottmeyer that was scored via header from Lexie Hillmer. It was about as textbook of a goal as you’ll see in high school soccer. The two teams traded opportunities all the way throughout, but the Governors defensive backline highlighted by Katelyn Taylor and Josephine Wurtz made goalkeeper Emlyn Swanson’s day rather routine. Although, Swanson still had to make her fair share of saves. With the win, the Governors move to 7-0-0 and sit in sole possession of second place in the Class AA standings behind 9-0-0 Harrisburg.
The boys faced an extremely fast and possession-oriented Brookings team that found two goals early off the foot of Joseph O’Neill and Raul Mendoza Galvan. They were two perfectly placed goals that keeper Carter Templeton could simply do nothing about. For the rest of the first half, Pierre couldn’t find any offensive attack and went into the half trailing 2-0. Pierre would shift the momentum in the second half, forging opportunities for themselves but were unable to find the back of the net. The Bobcats would take the boys game 2-0 dropping Pierre to 1-4-2 on the season.
Both boys and girls teams will go to Brandon Valley this weekend for a Saturday doubleheader.
