BROOKINGS – After being 10 points down in the fourth quarter, South Dakota State rallied for a 78-73 win Sunday over Alabama in a Women’s NIT semifinal game at Frost Arena.
Lindsey Theuninck hit a go-ahead three-pointer for the Jackrabbits (26-9) with 1:42 remaining, just about 30 seconds after Alabama had regained the lead at 72-71 on a Megan Adams jumper in the paint.
With Alabama leading 66-56 after scoring the fourth quarter’s first bucket, SDSU then scored the next 14 points in a run that lasted nearly five minutes. Tylee Irwin hit a three-pointer, followed by two Haleigh Timmer jumpers in the paint, two Myah Selland layup and a Timmer three-pointer.
The Crimson Tide took their last lead with Adams’ shot with 2:11 left, before Theuninck’s go-ahead three-pointer. Theuninck sealed the game for the Jackrabbits with another three-pointer with 14 seconds left.
Timmer led SDSU with 17 points. Paiton Burckhard and Theuninck each scored 14. Burckhard also had 10 rebounds. Selland had 13 points.
South Dakota State led 26-12 after one quarter and 44-33 at halftime before Alabama used a 34-12 third quarter advantage to take a 64-56 lead before the Jackrabbits outscored the Tide 22-9 in the fourth quarter.
SDSU will host UCLA in a Women’s NIT semifinal Thursday night at Frost Arena in Brookings.
