Pro choice supporters held a rally over the weekend (July 23-24, 2022) at the state Capitol in Pierre.
Cassie Hudson from Watertown was one of the organizers of the event. She organized a similar rally at the Codington County Courthouse in Watertown, then was encouraged to think bigger.
Hudson is pleased with the response they’ve received.
She says abortion is a complex, personal issue.
South Dakota is one of 13 states that had a trigger law in place to immediately make abortions illegal if Roe vs. Wade was overturned. Governor Kristi Noem and state republican leaders had initially said they were going to call a special session to address the topic. They’ve since said the current state laws are effective and any issues needing to be addresses can be taken care of during the 2023 legislative session.
