A man trapped in a 20,000 bushel grain bin Friday (March 6) afternoon (4:05pm) east of Pierre survived thanks to rescue efforts by multiple first responder agencies.
The Pierre Fire Department Rescue Squad, Harrold Fire Department and Pierre Rural Fire Department were called to the scene about 30 miles east of Pierre on Highway 34 and four miles south on Joe Creek road.
Pierre Fire Chief Ian Paul says the man was buried almost chest deep, but local residents had secured him with a rope so he wouldn’t sink any further into the corn.
Thanks to the safety precautions that were taken, Paul says this situation turned out well.
Also assisting with the rescue were Hughes County Sherriff, Highway Patrol, AMR and local residents.
Last month, 27-year-old Christopher Robert Bauman of Elkton was killed when trapped in a grain bin near Brookings.
